Principal Bernie

Founder Bernard Berkin, our Professor Emeritus, was founder and CEO of the influential educational publishing company General Learning Communications….

Founder Bernard Berkin is our Professor Emeritus. Principal Bernie began as an elementary school teacher, then became school principal, Manager of Educational Research and Development at the Community Resources Division for the Brunswick Corporation, and ultimately Founder of the influential educational publishing company General Learning Communications. The multiple award-winning GLC pioneered specialty publications and educational videos for students. Principal Bernie is the father of five and grandfather of seven, and has devoted his life to the cause of bringing superior education to all children. He directs and oversees every aspect of the pedagogical approach that we take with the BearBoy Club.

Michael Bai

Co-founder Michael Bai has 20+ years of prize-winning experience in TV and radio broadcasting, educational publication and international media markets…

Co-founder Michael Bai was born in China and lives and works in the US. He has 20+ years of prize-winning experience in TV and radio broadcasting, educational publication and international media markets. Michael has been a TV reporter and English News producer in China, producer and department director at Asian American Satellite TV, and chief editor at General Learning Communications for their multiple award-winning educational video series for Glencoe McGraw-Hill. Michael was inspired to help create the BearBoy Club through personal second language learning experience and by watching how his own son became bi-lingual and bi-cultural. He travels frequently between our teams in the US and China.

Our partner Charlie Chen is Founder and CEO of Chengdu Yiqi Interactive Technologies. Established in 2011, Yiqi develops cross-platform Internet software and mobile applications — including BearBoy Club Apps! The core BearBoy team at Yiqi includes graduates from top overseas design schools, seasoned game developers, award-winning programmers, and multi-talented animators and designers. Charlie is a computer engineer, entrepreneur and musician who brings all his artistry and expertise into making our BearBoy App Suite unique.

Co-founder Mary Trimble is an award-winning writer, scriptwriter and producer in the field of educational multimedia. She taught in over 100 grade schools through the Illinois Writer-in-Residence program, which gave her hands-on classroom experience and insight into how children learn. Mary has written scripts for television, worked for national educational publishers, and became lead writer at General Learning Communications, where she teamed up with Michael Bai. She’s a passionate believer in multicultural learning. Mary supervises and directs our writers, artists, language consultants and pre-school specialists. The mother of three and grandmother of two, Mary especially loves helping create the BearBoy Storytime fairy tales and fables.
